Hertfordshire-based Thoroughbred breeding operation Newsells Park Stud Ltd became the leading consignor for Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for the third time in the last six years. Four of Newsells Park’s yearlings sold for over 1 million guineas each, with 18 yearlings selling for more than 11 million guineas in total. Their most successful sale came in the form of a bay colt by Galileo out of Shastye, who sold for a staggering 3.4 million guineas, becoming the second highest priced yearling sold at public auction in 2018.
The stud, who have fed Dodson & Horrell, Europe’s leading equine feed, to their horses for over 18 years, are on amazing form having bred no less than four Group 1 winners this year.
Newsells Park Stud’s General Manager, Julian Dollar commented: “We’ve had a fantastic sale with some lovely horses who are in excellent condition, and have been well received by buyers, so we are thrilled." He went on to say “We thought we'd brought our strongest draft here, so it is both humbling and gratifying that the purchasers have felt the same. It reflects the great job done by the team at home."
The stud has been feeding Dodson & Horrell since the Jacobs family bought the operation back in 2000. “We are continually impressed by their professionalism in terms of the balance of the feeds they are putting together,” added Julian. “The horses have come to these sales in tip-top condition, and we think it’s important that people realise they are fed on Dodson & Horrell.”
The yearlings at Newsells Park are all fed a variant of the Dodson & Horrell Sales Prep mix which combines key amino acids with a high oil content and QLC antioxidants, while supporting digestive and hoof health and building body condition and topline.
“We work closely with Dodson & Horrell to create a feed that is carefully formulated and designed to suit our particular needs. The team comes out as often as we need to discuss any specific nutritional requirements. Their nutritionists are experts in their field, so it’s great to be able to talk to them and show them some of the youngsters and discuss ways in which we can improve things.”
Julian explains that the feeding regime at Newsells Park Stud consists of feeding the horses four meals per day, “We split the feeds as evenly as possible throughout the day because these young horses are doing a lot of work when they are in prep for the sales. There’s a huge amount of work that goes into these horses, so we ensure the feeding is just right to compliment that work. Some horses are fussy and don’t like being over faced with too much feed, so little and often suits them better and ensures they are getting the correct amount of nutritional support. We do an early morning feed, a lunchtime feed, an afternoon feed and an evening feed.”
The results of feeding Dodson & Horrell speak for themselves.
“Our horses look so well and most importantly, go onto prove themselves as world class racehorses. We find Dodson & Horrell a thoroughly good product and we like the results it’s getting for us both at the sales and more importantly, how these horses perform on the racetrack. The product is doing a good job and is a key component in getting these horses looking and feeling their best.”
Sam Horrell CEO at Dodson & Horrell, commented: “These young thoroughbred horses work exceptionally hard and it’s vital that they are getting a high-quality product that meets their demands. We work closely with expert nutritionists and vets who come together to create a product that stud managers, trainers and owners can rely on. We are proud to be associated with such a prestigious and successful operation as Newsells Park Stud and are pleased that they are seeing the benefits of our stud products which have recently been developed based on the latest research.”
