Feeding for calm temperament

30th March 2020

Have you spent the winter getting your horse fit and ready for the Spring season? Are you now thinking of ways to switch gears and ensure your diet supports calm behaviour?

Check out our tips on what you should be considering:

As spring grass starts to come through, remember it is naturally higher in sugar and calories. Review your diet and ensure these added calories and/or sugar won’t exceed your horse’s requirements and lead to exuberant behaviour, exacerbation of clinical conditions, and/or weight gain.

If you have been using a conditioning product in preparation for the competition season and are worried about weight gain due to a reduction in workload, consider swapping to a lower calorie feed.

If your horse is prone to fizzy behaviour on their current diet and a decreased workload may exacerbate this, consider swapping to a product that is higher in fibre and lower in starch and sugar.

Always remember to change feed slowly over the course of 10-14 days progressively increasing the proportion of new product as you simultaneously decrease the old product.

Have you considered: Be Calm Balancer? A high specification balancer formulated to promote a calm and even temperament.

Supplement your horses’s diet with Placid – A dried herbal blend suitable for nervous or excitable horses and ponies.

If you’re looking for additional high fibre options consider Classic Fibre Cubes and Mix, Fibergy, Safe & Sound, as well as KwikBeet.
